Rose is a tricky character: she’s a positive force for fans who’ve never seen themselves represented in Star Wars before, but she was used in The Last Jedi as a character who mostly told Finn what to do the entire time, making him look weaker than the former janitor and conscientious objector Stormtrooper we’d come to know who sabotaged Starkiller base alongside Han Solo. They arguably sidelined the character of Rose Tico, in the same way George Lucas arguably sidelined Lando in Return of the Jedi, and definitely sidelined Jar Jar after The Phantom Menace. So what of Johnson’s plot strands did Abrams and Terrio ignore? Most obviously, the kid with the broom at the end of The Last Jedi, though considering he was played by an unknown Russian extra likely hired on location, it seems doubtful that there were specific plans in mind for him. Particularly ironic, it seems to me, is the fact that many of the people who loved the previous installment, The Last Jedi, for ignoring some plot threads and making different choices rather than following the prior installment with more of the same.are now upset that their favorite Star Wars sequel was followed by one that ignored key plot threads and made different choices. Especially since I haven’t seen many takes that are particularly analytical of the things the film pulls off, rather than the disappointments people have over what it doesn’t pull off. And yet with my social media feeds still piling on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker daily, I feel the need to.
